Our maintenance program keeps track of fleet performance through the National Heavy Vehicle Inspection Scheme, government service quality audits, and customer feedback. Busways has consistently achieved a 98% defect-free rate in New South Wales.

The must-have requirements

Busways is contracted to the state government to operate public passenger services and must abide by their mandatory requirements. These include the following: 

  • Working with Children Check (WWCC) 
  • Medium Rigid (MR) licence or Heavy Rigid (HR) licence (dependent on contract area). A licence upgrade program for suitable candidates may be available. 
  • New South Wales Bus Driver Authority or South Australian Large Passenger Driver Accreditation. 

Working with Children Check

To drive a bus in our operating states, a Working with Children Check (WWCC) for paid employment is mandatory. Voluntary clearances are not accepted. 

  • NSW: Obtain your check online or in person at Service NSW. Fees apply.
  • SA: Obtain your check through the Department of Human Services (DHS). Fees apply.
     

Licence Requirements

Busways operates various bus types, including double-decker, articulated, and minibuses. Different buses require different licences, ranging from Medium Rigid (MR) to Heavy Rigid (HR), depending on the contract. We offer a license upgrade program for successful applicants.

NSW Licence Upgrade steps

  • Pass a knowledge test at Service NSW and get your Heavy Vehicle Competency-Based Assessment (HVCBA) learner logbooks.
  • Complete practical driving instruction with an RMS instructor.
  • Pass a Full Competency Assessment (FCA) with an RMS instructor/assessor.
  • Submit your completed assessment to Service NSW and apply for your new licence

SA Licence Upgrade steps

  • Meet the minimum age requirement
  • Have no medical restrictions
  • Hold the appropriate class of licence for the specified time

MR Licence Upgrade Steps

Pass a knowledge test at Service NSW and get your Heavy Vehicle Competency-Based Assessment (HVCBA) learner logbooks.

Pass a Full Competency Assessment (FCA) with an RMS instructor/assessor.

It is imperative that you get the correct learner logbook to complete the MR licence upgrade. When receiving your logbook check the first page to confirm your logbook is for an MR licence NOT HR licence.

Accreditation Requirements

NSW and SA

All bus drivers operating Public Passenger Vehicles in NSW and SA must hold the relevant accreditation to verify that they are a fit and proper person of good repute and have been authorised by the relevant government body to transport public passengers by means of a bus service. 

Obtaining a Driver Authority

NSW

To be a bus driver in NSW you must obtain a Driver Authority (DA) through Service NSW. To be eligible, you need to: 

  • Meet the minimum age requirement 
  • Hold an unrestricted NSW driver’s licence 
  • Have held an unrestricted Australian driver’s licence for at least 12 months in the past two years 
  • Be legally allowed to work in Australia 


During the recruitment process, Busways may offer a DA training course to help you get the required proficiency certificate. The trainer will guide you through the application process and requirements. 
To apply for your Driver Authority (DA) with Service NSW, you'll need: 

  • Completed DA application form 
  • Proficiency certificate (from DA course) 
  • Completed medical assessment 
  • Certified identity documents 
  • National police check 


The process takes about 10 business days after submission. To avoid delays, submit your application as soon as possible online or in person at Service NSW. Fees may apply.


SA

To be a bus driver in SA, you must obtain a Large Passenger Driver Accreditation from the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT). To apply, you must:

  • Hold a full SA driver's licence (Light Rigid minimum for 6 months)
  • Have a Working with Children Check (via DHS)
  • Obtain a national criminal history check (must include "Driver accreditation licensing, unsupervised contact with the vulnerable")
  • Provide a Certificate of Fitness for commercial vehicle drivers

Penrith depot workshop is best-in-class, fully equipped with dedicated under chassis inspection bays, in-ground heavy vehicle brake, steering and suspension testing equipment, heavy vehicle maintenance tooling and equipment, keeping the fleet at the highest standard seen in the industry. 


The fleet has already started the transition to battery electric buses, with drivers and mechanics being trained in new and changing technologies, along with an onsite solar panel system serves the site's energy needs sustainably. With services operating from 4am to 1am, Penrith depot is a busy depot with lots of different work schedule opportunities and route types. Featuring modern employee lunchrooms, driver recreation facilities such as a computer room and ping pong table, and a quiet room for resting during split shifts, it's a home away from home.
