For some students, a bus ride can be a big new experience. 

At a recent Busways Bus Education Program session with Autism Spectrum Australia Central Coast School, students had the chance to learn about bus safety in a practical and supported way. For several students, it was their first-ever bus ride. 

The session helped students with different abilities become familiar with boarding, travelling on, and getting off a bus, while building confidence in a safe and positive environment. 

Kira, a teacher from Autism Spectrum Australia Central Coast School, described the visit as a “fantastic community adventure”. 

“For several of our students, this was likely their first-ever bus ride. While accessing the community can sometimes present challenges for our students, it makes opportunities like this all the more meaningful. The sheer excitement and endless smiles on their faces said it all. They had an absolute blast,” Kira said. 

The impact continued after the session, with staff sharing that students were still talking about the Busways bus. One student kept asking for a Busways bus added to their daily visual schedule. 

The session is one example of the broader impact of Busways Bus Education Program, which has reached 49 schools helping more than 6700 students across NSW and SA so far this year, helping students learn about safe bus travel while building confidence, familiarity, and positive connections with public transport.
