Around 120 buses a day, plenty of elbow grease and a few high-fives. For Marija Hoori, Head Cleaner at Busways’ Penrith Depot, getting buses ready for the road is a team effort.

This Thank Your Cleaner Day, Busways is recognising the people who keep our buses and workplaces clean and welcoming for customers and employees.

Marija leads Penrith Depot’s cleaning team, where busy shifts are made brighter by the people working alongside her.
Team members often work independently across the depot, but they make time to share a laugh and recognise a job well done.

“We praise each other and hi-five when we’ve done a great job,” Marija said. “We have a bit of a joke most days and enjoy each other’s company.”

The work involves much more than a quick tidy. The team removes rubbish, cleans floors and windows, and tackles easily missed corners, ready for the customers who will step aboard. Cleaners are also another set of eyes across the fleet. They spot graffiti, damage and other issues and report them so they can be addressed before buses return to the road.

There’s rarely a dull shift. Passengers leave behind everything from mobile phones and school bags to musical instruments, with some more unusual discoveries along the way.

For Marija, the role also offers flexibility for family life. After working in an office and spending time as a stay-at-home mum, she wanted something different when she returned to work.

Her shifts allow her to be available during the day for her ageing parents and other family commitments.
Passengers may not see the work that goes into preparing a bus, but they experience the results every time they step aboard.

This Thank Your Cleaner Day, we’re saying a big thank you to Marija and our cleaning teams across all 20 Busways depots for the care, effort and pride they bring to their work every day.
