Bridging learning and action: Leigha George’s reconciliation journey

As National Reconciliation Week prompts reflection on the connection between past, present and future, we turn to the stories of team members who are helping to shape a more inclusive workplace and community.

One such story is that of Leigha George, whose passion for learning and genuine care for others exemplify the impact of Busways' Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) in motion.

Leigha began with Busways in 2023, moving from hands-on animal care into her first corporate role as an Engagement and Events Officer. Initially focused on planning events for depots and offices, her natural curiosity about the purpose behind those events inspired her to explore new avenues of employee engagement. Over the past year, Leigha has introduced workplace banking, novated leasing and life-insurance programs, a new employee engagement platform and various initiatives designed to help employees in important aspects of their lives.

In early 2024, Leigha was invited by Sustainability Manager, Suzanne Mildren, and Head of Human Resources, Alanna Ward, to join the RAP Working Group. Despite having little prior knowledge of reconciliation work, she embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm. Through regular meetings and participation in Reconciliation Australia’s RAP Learning Circle, Leigha discovered the importance of stepping outside her own perspective to build genuine, respectful relationships with First Nations communities.

Reflecting on her experience, Leigha said, “Attending the RAP Learning Circle really lit a fire in my belly and empowered me to help make an impact."

“This isn’t just another task in my job description—it’s real work that can make a real difference to future generations. There is such diversity within Indigenous cultures, but that only motivates me to keep learning and building genuine relationships. It’s also helped me find my voice, I’ve become more confident to speak up and contribute with purpose. I feel lucky that Busways' supporting learning and growth for their employees has allowed me to learn about Indigenous culture and do meaningful work that matters.”

Suzanne Mildren, Sustainability Manager, has seen Leigha’s transformation firsthand: “Leigha’s curiosity and passion for learning have been remarkable. Her energy and insights are helping us embed our RAP in everyday work, and I am glad to have her as part of the team.”

Leigha’s journey to becoming an active driver of cultural awareness—demonstrates how empowering and upskilling people can create ripple effects of positive change.

As National Reconciliation Week draws to a close, we remain committed to walking this path together, recognising that reconciliation is an ongoing journey of partnership, respect and shared growth.
