Learning goes beyond school grounds: Developing lifelong skills
Forty-eight students from Years 7 to 10 at Chifley College, Mount Druitt Support Unit, recently took part in a Busways travel training and bus safety session - learning essential life skills that support independence and safe travel.
The program is tailored to different learning needs and is especially impactful for students in support units who benefit from visual, hands-on learning. It aligns with school’s PDHPE learning outcomes and helps bridge the gap between theory and practice.
Through guided activities and a real bus experience, students learn how to safely board, ride, and exit the bus, as well as important behaviours such as staying seated, using seatbelts where available, and crossing the road safely.
Fiona C., School Learning and Support Officer at Chifley College, said the program offers more than just safety education.
“This program is so important for our students,” she said. “It helps build their confidence to travel independently and gives them a chance to step outside the classroom and learn practical, real-world skills in a supportive environment.”
Busways’ is now offering FREE bus safety sessions to all primary schools in our operating regions. Schools can book a session via the link below. https://www.busways.com.au/bus-education-program
