Road Rules Awareness Week 2025

This week is Road Rules Awareness Week - the perfect time to highlight the road rules that keep everyone safe. Whether you’re a passenger, motorist, pedestrian, or cyclist, when it comes to buses, there are several important rules and factors to consider.

Many drivers think they know the rules, but misunderstandings are a major cause of avoidable accidents. A quick refresher can make all the difference — you can find everything you need in the Road User Handbook

Jason Roberts, Busways Head of Service Delivery – Greater Sydney, says safety starts with understanding how buses move on the road.

“Because buses are large and heavy, they take longer to stop. Drivers need to give them plenty of space, avoid pulling in front, and allow them to merge safely into traffic. Pedestrians should be alert for approaching buses, and passengers are advised to hold on while the bus is moving.”

Key safety reminders:

  • Give buses space — they can’t stop as quickly as cars.
  • Always give way when a bus is merging.
  • Slow to 40km/h when bus lights are flashing.
  • Hold on while the bus is moving and stay seated until it stops.
