Protective screens to boost driver safety across Busways’ South Adelaide fleet

Bus driving at Busways’ Adelaide depots just became safer with new driver protection screens currently being installed across 130 buses in Busways Adelaide Outer South contract region by the South Australian Government.
Designed to shield drivers from anti-social passenger behaviour, the protective screens provide a stronger sense of comfort and control on the road for bus drivers and were trialled in collaboration with operators.
Neil Henderson, Busways SA General Manager, said it was a practical, safety-first measure by Public Transport South Australia in conjunction with bus operators and it was invaluable to involve Busways drivers in the testing of different concept screen designs before a final screen design was selected.
“The new screens offer drivers both physical protection and peace of mind, enhancing their daily experience and creating a safer network environment, which in turn improves service quality for passengers.
“We’re always looking at ways to improve the experience for drivers and passengers and these new screens are a great example of how collaboration can lead to meaningful safety outcomes,” Mr Henderson said.
Busways worked with the State Government to provide feedback on the screen designs with seven different prototype screens trialled. Following the trial, two designs were shortlisted for a broader trial across 40 buses operating around Adelaide. Real-time feedback was collected from drivers, which helped inform the final design. A dedicated working group—consisting of drivers, operators, and the Transport Workers Union—was instrumental in refining the chosen screen, ensuring it met the needs of those behind the wheel.
Graham Duckworth, bus driver and Transport Workers Union representative from the Busways service region, said, “Drivers operating buses with the new screens installed have told me they feel much more secure than before.”
The final screen features a durable stainless-steel black metal frame and three polycarbonate panels up to 9.5mm thick. Designed to resist forceful tampering, the screen is securely mounted to avoid detachment if pulled or struck. It also allows for clear visibility to essential areas such as mirrors, doors, and the windscreen, ensuring safety is not compromised for functionality.
The driver screens are fully funded by PTSA. Installations are already commissioned and expected to be completed across buses in the near future
