Staying Bus Aware: A road safety reminder during NRSW 2025

Being alert and respectful around buses is a simple but powerful way to help keep our roads safer — and it’s a message Busways has been sharing widely during National Road Safety Week 2025 from 11 – 18 May 2025.

Every year, approximately 1200 people are killed and another 40,000+ are seriously injured on Australian roads. Traffic injury is the biggest killer of Australian children under 15 and the second-biggest killer of all Australians aged between 15 and 24. These numbers are growing every year but are preventable if we choose to Drive So Others Survive!

National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, partnering road safety organisations and Government. The week highlights the impact of road trauma and ways to reduce it.

Through school visits, public info-stalls, and a digital awareness campaign, Busways is focusing this week on practical road safety habits around buses: giving way to buses, being mindful of their longer stopping distances, blind spots, and holding on or staying seated when onboard.

Over 450 students across local schools will take part in bus safety sessions during the week, learning how to move safely around buses — part of a wider effort that’s reached around 4,000 students so far this year.

On the streets, info-stalls across Greater Sydney gave the public a chance to ask questions and hear directly from the Busways team about how to stay safe near buses, and this message also spread on social media.

“Teaching kids how to travel safely now builds lifelong habits,” said Sarah Langthorne, Customer Experience Manager at Busways. “But road safety isn’t just for children — it’s something we all need to take seriously, every day.”

“Take the “Drive so others survive” pledge and remind everyone — drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians — to stay alert around heavy vehicles,” Mrs Langthorne said.

As part of the community, Busways is using this week to highlight how small actions — giving way, staying alert, showing patience — can help protect lives on our roads.
