Port Macquarie apprentice mechanic Drew Miante has been named the BusNSW Apprentice of the Year 2025, recognising her skill, determination and contribution to keeping buses safely on the road for her community. Drew is in her third year of a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology and is a valued member of the Busways Port Macquarie depot team. 

From the moment she joined the depot, Drew has thrown herself into learning every aspect of bus maintenance. She supports senior mechanics with complex repairs, tackles challenging diagnostics, and has volunteered for advanced training opportunities, including engine rebuild work not regularly performed on the North Coast. Her focus, reliability, and attention to detail ensure buses return to service quickly and safely, helping thousands of passengers get where they need to go every day. 

“I’m proud to be part of a team that values me and invests in my growth,” Drew said. “I have great mentors and teammates who always have my back, and I am excited to keep learning and take on bigger challenges.” 

Busways Regional Asset Manager Shane Golden said Drew’s award reflects both her commitment and the supportive culture at the depot. “Drew’s determination and willingness to step up to every challenge has made her a standout apprentice,” Shane said.  

“She is a part of an incredible team, where every single person works hard, backs each other, shares knowledge, and celebrates effort. That’s what makes achievements like these possible.” 

Last year, Port Macquarie also celebrated success at BusNSW, with driver Kath Curry receiving the Driver of the Year award. These milestones demonstrate the strength and camaraderie of the depot, where people are encouraged to grow, take pride in their work, and support one another along the way. 

For Drew, the award is an important milestone in a journey built on hard work, curiosity, and a passion for learning. It’s a reflection of what can be achieved when a great team surrounds you, and the start of even bigger things ahead in her career.
