Paul Rose on Driver seat

Paul Rose never imagined a career behind the wheel when he was working in technology. Thirteen years ago, he chose a new path as a bus driver. Today, he is one of the most respected drivers on the North Shore, known for his calm presence and steady judgement.

Before joining the transport industry, Paul spent 16 years as a computer specialist at Telstra and served in the Royal Australian Reserves. He was ready for something new, a career that would let him explore different avenues and be more connected to the community around him. That technical precision and military discipline shaped his approach to driving, bringing skills to a role where split-second decisions can mean everything.

For him, every shift is an exercise in reading people, anticipating challenges, and keeping dozens of passengers safe through Sydney's unpredictable traffic. He manages the moving parts of each shift with quiet confidence whether its traffic changes or passenger queries. He keeps services running and helps thousands reach school, work, and medical appointments. For many, he is the first friendly face they see each day.

"It's about more than just driving," Paul reflects. "Every day, you're helping people get to work, to medical appointments, to see their families. That responsibility never leaves you."

It's this sense of purpose that draws many people to bus driving. Paul found meaningful work that combines independence, community connection, and the satisfaction of knowing each shift matters.

His Willoughby depot manager sees this every day. Tony Moujalli says Paul is the driver you want on the road when things go wrong. "He's technically excellent, but he also reads situations and people instinctively. That's what makes him exceptional."

But 17 October 2024 tested those qualities beyond measure. First on the scene for a fatal collision on Sydney Harbour Bridge, Paul's training and character came together in a critical moment. After securing his bus and reassuring passengers, he ran towards the wreckage to help rescue a driver from a vehicle at risk of fire, working with emergency services while staying in touch with the control room.

"You don't think about it," he says simply. "Someone needed help."

Away from incidents like this, Paul's impact shows in the small moments. Waiting for someone running to the stop. Guiding visitors new to the area. Returning lost phones without hesitation. These gestures reflect how he sees his role: driving is not only about the road, it's about looking after people.

A devoted father of two with a passion for Australian and Japanese cultures, he brings warmth and professionalism to everything he does. His colleagues describe him as humble and well liked, leading through actions rather than words.

“As a bus driver, you have the chance to make everyday life easier for people,” he explains. "I came from a completely different professional world, and I found something I never expected, a job where everyday interactions matters.”

“Bus driving offers stable income, meaningful work, and the chance to serve your community in a role that's genuinely valued.”
