From learner to leader: Sally’s move to driving Adelaide forward
Two and a half years ago, Sally-Ann Paech made a life-changing decision. With no prior experience in public transport, she joined Busways’ Lonsdale Depot in Adelaide. Today, she’s not just a skilled bus driver - she’s also a driver mentor, helping new recruits gain the confidence and skills to succeed.
She’s one of increasing number of women getting behind the wheel on the Adelaide Metro network.
“I came in with just a car licence, and Busways gave me the opportunity to upskill,” Sally says. “They supported me through paid training to get my heavy vehicle licence, and now I get to help others on their own journey.”
Initially, Sally was surprised to learn how extensive Adelaide’s bus network is. “There are only about three hours overnight when buses don’t run. That means there’s a wide range of shifts, which can really suit different lifestyles - especially if you’re returning to work or juggling family life.”
More than just a job, Sally sees driving as a way to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. One day, while on a route to McLaren Vale, she had a conversation with a passenger grieving her husband’s recent passing. “I just listened. She needed someone to talk to. Later that day, I picked up her mother-in-law, who was also struggling with the loss. I remembered her name, and now every time I see her, I say hello - it means a lot to her.”
Sally’s caring approach is what makes her stand out, and it's a quality she believes anyone can bring to the role. “It’s the little things that count. A smile, remembering someone’s name, being a safe and friendly presence - those things really matter.”
She first considered becoming a bus driver after meeting another female bus driver at a shopping centre. “I’d never thought about it before, but it planted a seed. Later, when I was at a crossroads in my life, I saw an opportunity and decided to go for it. I haven’t looked back.”
For other women thinking about a new direction or returning to the workforce, Sally’s advice is clear: “Bite the bullet and give it a go. It’s not as hard as you might think. Busways has great training, and they really try to support work-life balance.”
As a mentor, Sally is passionate about helping new drivers succeed. “I share my story to help others feel confident. We focus on customer service, safety, and building the skills to handle whatever comes up on the road.”
She loves the variety in her day - from city streets to coastal runs - and the strong sense of camaraderie among drivers. “There’s always a wave or a smile between buses. In the depot, the team is really supportive and there’s a great sense of fun.”
Her message is simple: “Anyone can do this job - with a friendly smile, a willingness to learn, and good road sense. If you’re thinking about it, take the leap.”
