National Road Safety Week 2026 runs from 17 to 24 May, and Busways is marking the week with a focus on keeping our roads and communities safer. The week is an annual initiative of the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group, calling on all Australians to Drive So Others Survive.

Every year, approximately 1200 people are killed, and over 40,000 are seriously injured on Australian roads, preventable tragedies that affect families and communities across the country. The week highlights the devastating impact of road trauma and reminds all road users, including drivers, passengers, cyclists, and pedestrians, that keeping our roads safe is a shared responsibility.

As part of the week, Busways is supporting Blacktown City Council at their Pram-O-Rama Hour on Thursday, 21 May at Village Green, Blacktown. This free community event is designed to help new parents and carers travel safely and confidently on public transport. A route bus will be on site so families can learn how to board and secure a pram safely.

Road safety is something Busways works on all year round. In the past year alone, Busways has educated over 450 students across local schools about safe bus boarding and travelling practices. We also work closely with councils to support seniors and differently-abled passengers in travelling with greater confidence.

Donna Frith, Director Corporate Affairs and Customer Experience at Busways, said National Road Safety Week is an important opportunity to reinforce practical safety messages within the community.

We work throughout the year with local schools in our service regions to educate children about safe bus boarding and travelling practices, and with councils to help build confidence for seniors, families, and differently abled passengers using public transport.”

Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Whether you’re driving, cycling, or travelling on a bus, staying aware and showing patience can make a significant difference.”

This National Road Safety Week, we encourage everyone in our community to take the Drive So Others Survive pledge at roadsafetyweek.com.au and commit to safer habits on our roads, not just this week, but every day of the year.
