We are proud to support the local communities in our areas of operation. This involves encouraging community initiatives, promoting local business growth and actively participating in charity fundraising. Our most recent endeavours include:
World Vision
The Busways Head Office Sponsorship Club has just celebrated three years supporting the work of World Vision in alleviating the suffering of disadvantaged communities across the globe in the quest to end world poverty.
A group of head office employees donate money each month to sponsor two young girls- 9 year old Paro in India and 11 year old Saquina in Mozambique. Sponsorship helps to fund projects that benefit the children, their families and the communities they live in by addressing healthcare, education, water, food and agriculture and income.
During the past three years the club has also purchased a number of relief gifts including a goat for a family in Africa, school supplies for a child in Asia, an Emergency Relief Pack for a family in crisis wherever it's needed, the construction of a toilet and hygiene education in a rural community and an energy saving stove that requires much less wood to be collected by women and children.
The club is proud of it's efforts to date and looks forward to providing further support to aid programs in the future. For more information on World Vision and its programs visit www.worldvision.com.au
Gosford Council School Environmental Awards Program
The Greenhouse Program is a component of Gosford City Councils Environmental Awareness Program and has been running for 21 years. The program focuses on reducing waste and avoiding consumption of precious resources.
Busways has provided sponsorship for the program since 2007 and were excited to be involved again in 2009.
The aim of the program is to illistrate the link between the health of our environment, consumer habits and what we can do to make our environmental footprint smaller.
At the closing of the program, an awards ceremony was held which was full of colour and excitement and had a strong educational focus. In addition to performances, winning schools were presented with awards- Busways provided $250 charter vouchers to the winning schools- Spencer Public School, Lisarow Public School and Gosford Public School.
Busways look forward to further involvement in the 2010 program
Free Charters for Children in need
Stewart House has a proud record of providing short-term respite care to thousands of children in need. Stewart House is unique. It consists of a government school and a statutory health corporation operating together on the one site at South Curl Curl. Stewart House gives children the opportunity of enjoying the life of a child, often for the first time. Children are given medical, dental and optometric assessments and if necessary treatment and/or referral to an appropriate specialist.
For several years, Busways has transported children free of charge from Wyong, Toukley and Gosford and Blacktown to Stewarts House and continued to do so in 2009 .
Australia's Biggest Morning Tea
Every year, Busways staff at head office and local depots raise money for the Cancer Council by hosting Australia's Biggest Morning Tea events.
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is one of Cancer Council’s leading fundraising events and the largest, most successful event of its kind in Australia. Over $60 million has been raised since it first began in 1994.
Funds raised from the event go towards Cancer Council research, prevention, education and support
In 2009, Busways staff raised more than $750 for the Cancer Council from this annual event.
St Vincent De Paul Christmas Luncheon
In December 2009, Busways provided a bus and a driver donated his time to transport underprivileged families from the Campbelltown area to the Christmas Luncheon held at John Therry Catholic High School.
Uniting Care Burnside
Burnside Youth Services South West region held their annual Christmas Lunch in December 2009 for disadvantaged and vulnerable families, children and young people in the Macarthur area. As has been done for several years now, Busways donated 30 bus tickets to Burnside to assist in transporting people home after lunch.
Macleay Schools Walk Against Warming
In December 2009, Macleay Schools participated in the Walk Against Warming (WAW)- a day organised by a local public school for students of the Macleay Valley to make a statement against global warming in conjunction with the Climate Change Summit in Copenhagan.
Approximately 750 students for 10 schools walked 4 kilometres from South West Rocks to Trial Bay Gaol to form a human WAW sign.
Buways provided discounted travel for those attanding the event- in all, 13 buses and drivers were required.
Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) Program
The Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) Program is a road safety education program, aimed at reducing death and injury amongst young people on Australian roads.
The program targets 16-17 year olds and is a one day event which coordinates the efforts of local road safety experts, driving instructors, the Police, recovering survivors of road crashes and drug and alcohol educators.
Busways provided sponsorship for RYDA events at Kempsey and the Clarence Valley.
